Law and Ethics

3.4 Staff_Letter copy2.jpg

On each issue's staff page, we have a disclaimer that tells our readers that the views expressed in the magazine do not reflect those of our school. We welcome comments and letters from readers to give us feedback.

For each article, we credit the writers and photographers. We also make sure to credit our sources.

We write according to our school's rules which include the areas of unprotected speech. Before we print anything, we discuss our stories and make sure there is nothing harmful in them. In everything we publish, we try to maintain an objective viewpoint unless it is an opinion.

Ad Mixup

When we received our most recent issue (winter 2018), we saw a mistake. The wrong ads were printed in the Quill. An error in communication between the marketing class and the Quill staff caused this mistake. Ultimately, we on the Quill staff submitted the wrong files to the printer. To make things right, we decided to handle the cost to print new copies of the magazine with the corrected ads. This was a positive solution to a problem that caused a lot of frustration.

Anonymous Sources

As a newsmagazine, we do our best to avoid using anonymous sources. We only use them if their involvement in the story could cause them harm.

In this example, I wrote the story of an anonymous source's experience with sexual assault. This was connected to the package about sexual assault. I did my best to share this story in a credible and professional way.
