Designs

This is the final issue's kindness spread. I wanted to reflect summer in the photos by using them in color. I wanted to keep the design light and fun. This was a great way to finish out the year.

The summer recipes were very fun to make and even more fun to design. I kept the design clean and similar to past recipes. I made use of the vibrant colors within the design as well. I really enjoy this spread.

This article was a big feat. I wanted the design to be simple to let the article speak for itself. Because the article is about family, I wanted Natalie's artwork to be the focus, as she is a member of the Flock family. It also gave the spread a more homemade feel. I wanted to continue the theme of falcon wings but add color to show the change happening. I like the continuity of the design.

I utilized the beauty of the plants for this design. I wanted to use a lot of the pictures because they complement each other. I wanted to keep it uniform with the square and rectangular photos. The design is simple to showcase the plants.

I enjoyed working on this package the most for the winter 2018 issue. I knew I wanted to do black and white photos for the package, so I talked with the photographers for these spreads and shared my ideas. They did a wonderful job and took the pictures I had envisioned. With such a serious topic, I wanted to keep it simple with a few pull-quotes and a resource box.

For this part of the package, it was important to me to use the same font for all of the titles to keep it uniform. I also chose photos that went together well. I thought the photo of our model looking into the light was a perfect choice for the "Stepping Out" story.

To signal a change in writer, I chose lighter photos. This kept with the theme and provided a good variety. I like the way the poem looks on the page, and I think I found the perfect handwritten font. Again, I like how the title font never changes.

The recipes are always my favorite spread to design. I work with Halle Robbins to get the photos how we will want them for the design. I was very excited to use the picture as the background for the instructions. I also liked using the colors to really incorporate the theme: the holidays. This was from the winter 2018 issue.

This year, I started a recurring spread in the Quill that highlights kind students. This was our first kindness spread from the fall 2018 issue. Halle Robbins and I took these students out for a photo shoot. We wanted to use candid photographs to showcase their personalities. Natalie Ross drew out the title. All of these aspects made this design one of my favorites.

This is the design for our food reviews from the winter 2018 issue. We chose to review coffee drinks. I helped stage this photo for the design because I wanted to utilize a picture as the background. Using the full-spread photograph made the coffee come to life and make a bigger impact on the readers.

Here is the letter I wrote for the winter 2018 issue. I like to make the designs for the letters simple. I chose to use a black and white photo for this spread because we used a lot of black and white in this issue. I wanted to keep it consistent. It is also important for me to scan in my signature; I want it to be personal.

This article is about an event at my school that we had to start the conversation about mental health, healthy relationships and drug abuse. Our school mascot is a falcon, so I asked Natalie Ross to illustrate one for the design. I kept it simple to showcase the story and the artwork. This design was published in the winter 2018 issue.

For this design, I really wanted to focus on incorporating the subject of the article. I used a blue photo to connect to the title and the mood. I also matched the colors of the photo with the other elements I used on the page. We published this spread in the winter 2018 issue.
